Project "Sustainable Development of the 'Heritage BG' Center of Excellence"

The implementation of project BG16RFPR002-1.014-0011 "Sustainable Development of the 'Heritage BG' Center of Excellence" has been launched. The project is funded under grant procedure № BG16RFPR002-1.014 "Sustainable Development of Centers of Excellence and Centers of Competence," including specific infrastructures or their unions from the National Roadmap for Research Infrastructure.

The leading organization for project BG16RFPR002-1.014-0011 is Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski," with the following partner organizations:

The thematic area of the Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization (ISSS) targeted by the "Heritage BG" CoE is "New Technologies in Creative and Recreative Industries."

The mission of the "Heritage BG" Center of Excellence is to contribute to revealing Bulgaria's heritage, its socialization, and its transformation into a resource for prosperity. Because living in an ancient country with historical, cultural, and natural diversity is both a privilege and a responsibility.

"Heritage BG" transforms Bulgarian heritage into an economic resource for regional development through the potential of science, new technologies, and by uniting the capabilities of business, NGOs, and local communities. The CoE contributes to training a qualified workforce capable of developing the tourism industry. It educates teachers, university lecturers, and museum researchers who are familiar with the opportunities offered by cultural and natural heritage. The CoE connects the economy and communities with natural and cultural heritage through new digital products and services based on new knowledge.

The main objective of the project for the period until 2029 is to achieve sustainable development of the "Heritage BG" CoE and to form the @Heritage BG ecosystem through:

  1. Effective use of research infrastructure for scientific development and R&D.
  2. Good management of research teams and improving the quality of human resources for R&D.
  3. Effective international cooperation and researcher mobility.
  4. Integrating @Heritage BG into the country's innovation ecosystem through:
    • Transfer of improved or new knowledge to interested organizations (business, education, NGOs) for internal innovation.
    • Transfer of new digital products and services to organizations to achieve innovation.
    • Open or authorized access to digital objects contributing to digital transformation.
    • Sharing metadata of heritage samples with national and EU institutions.
    • Sharing data (e.g., on socio-economic benefits of heritage) with institutions and stakeholders.
  5. Use of clean/green technologies in infrastructure operation and product development.
  6. Implementation of joint projects with businesses, NGOs, and municipalities.
  7. Promoting heritage through public events and active collaboration with local communities.

Building the @Heritage BG ecosystem is a complex, multi-layered, and long-term process combining the latest digital technologies with traditional heritage management approaches. Stakeholders range from national and local institutions to businesses and NGOs. Essentially, the strategic goal of the CoE is to achieve effective digital transformation in memory institutions and provoke new approaches in heritage management for economic and social benefit.

The Work Packages (WP) for project BG16RFPR002-1.014-0011 are as follows:

  1. Revealing Bulgarian cultural heritage and its socialization through new technologies.
  2. Natural heritage as a resource for socio-economic development.
