Laboratory of Cartography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
The Laboratory of Cartography and GIS is equipped with specialized software, a 3D printer, and an Augmented Reality Sandbox (AR Sandbox).
A variety of educational courses are conducted in the laboratory - Topographic Mapping, Map Projections, Cartography, Thematic Mapping, and GIS. Students specializing in "Cartography and GIS" study in-depth the extensive possibilities of Geodata Visualization, as well as Digital Cartography and GIS. They are trained in 3D cartographic modeling, WEB mapping, and map production. Additional elective disciplines relevant to modern society include Virtual Cartographic Modeling, Navigation Mapping, Mapping for Disaster Management, Topographic Cartography, and Specialized Mapping.

The Laboratory of Cartography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was established by Order №389/02.09.2022 of the Rector of UACEG. It holds the status of a teaching and research laboratory. It is the successor to the Laboratory of Cartography, which on March 1, 2013, was named after Prof. Dr. Eng. Benjamin Cohen (1930-2003) – a prominent Bulgarian scientist and lecturer in cartography.
The laboratory hosts lecture courses under the Erasmus+ program with international guest lecturers, as well as seminars, workshops, and additional training sessions. Key topics of these events include disaster response and the role of maps in crisis situations, 3D cartographic modeling, and other modern techniques in cartography and GIS.
The laboratory supports the development of diploma theses for students specializing in Cartography and GIS, as well as scientific research for obtaining the educational and scientific degree of Doctor in professional field 5.7. Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Geodesy, scientific specialty "Cartography and GIS". It provides an environment for developing both internal projects within UACEG and national and international projects aimed at progress in the field of cartography and GIS.
The Laboratory of Cartography and GIS actively supports the National Competition for Children's Maps, part of the Barbara Petchenik International Children's Map Competition organized by the International Cartographic Association (ICA). Traditionally, UACEG is a partner in organizing the competition at the national level. The laboratory team also participates in the preparation of the International Conference on Cartography and GIS, held every two years. It is organized by the Bulgarian Cartographic Association with the support of the ICA and UACEG.
