About the "Cultural Heritage Preservation" Program

The Master's program in "Cultural Heritage Conservation" provides in-depth knowledge and skills necessary for the protection and conservation of our historical monuments.

What will you learn?

Within the framework of the Master's program, all fundamental issues are addressed, related to:

  • Contemporary theory of immovable cultural property preservation;
  • The evolution of public perceptions regarding their significance;
  • International and national legal frameworks and institutional systems for preservation activities;
  • Main forms of legal and territorial-spatial protection of immovable cultural assets;
  • The inherent link between heritage preservation and historical knowledge of its essence;
  • Traditional building materials, techniques, and technologies characteristic of regional heritage, alongside modern methods for conservation intervention;
  • Methodological approaches for study, documentation, investigation, condition assessment, and design for the conservation, restoration, and adaptation of cultural property in the fields of architecture, civil engineering, and geodesy; modern principles of sustainable management;
  • Socialization of cultural assets by improving accessibility, modern interpretation tools, museography methods, etc.

Professional Skills

The program will prepare you to be a highly qualified specialist capable of performing complex investigations, restoration and conservation designs, and participating in cultural heritage management.

PROFESSIONAL REALIZATION

Graduates of our program have unique opportunities in various spheres related to heritage preservation. You can work as a conservator or restorer, participate in the design and construction of historical buildings, manage cultural institutions, or contribute to heritage policy development. Your expertise will be sought after in state institutions, NGOs, museums, galleries, and private companies.

Cultural Heritage

The "Cultural Heritage Conservation" program is an excellent choice for professionals who wish to upgrade and expand their knowledge and master a wide range of multidisciplinary issues in the field of heritage protection.

Admission Requirements

A completed higher education degree (Bachelor's or Master's) in programs from Professional Field 5.7 "Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Geodesy" or "Landscape Architecture" (Professional Field 6.5 "Forestry") from the University of Forestry.

State-funded admission is available for candidates with a Bachelor's degree in the above-mentioned fields. If candidates exceed the allocated state-funded spots, ranking is based on the following criteria:

  • GPA of the Higher Education Diploma.
  • In case of an equal GPA, preference is given to candidates who completed their Bachelor’s at UACEG.

Other candidates may enroll in the paid tuition form of study, subject to the Higher Education Act and fees determined by the Academic Council.

Program Structure

Duration: three semesters
Intake: Winter semester

The curriculum is developed over three semesters (one and a half academic years). The program's syllabus is designed in accordance with Bulgarian higher education legislation, internationally established modern principles, and the best practices of leading Bulgarian and international universities.

Training includes lecture courses, seminars, practical training (domestic and international), and independent study.

The program is conducted under the guidance of UACEG academic staff, guest lecturers from international universities, and distinguished experts with proven field expertise, in cooperation with leading conservation firms.

Classes take place at the "Heritage BG" Center of Excellence at UACEG, utilizing its specialized research laboratories for documentation, modeling, and conservation of immovable cultural heritage (CNIL-DM-NKN and CNIL-KR-NKN).

The program concludes with a Master’s thesis aimed at demonstrating acquired professional skills in heritage preservation within a multidisciplinary team. The thesis is defended before a State Examination Commission.
